When I ask an agent, I need health insurance they will proceed to explain to me and then they mention "medical card". And then they say, "Your medical card will only cost you RM 250 per month".

Actually, what is medical card? I'm confused.

Hi Mei Lin,

A medical card is a card that provides cashless facilities and admission to any private or government hospitals. When you purchase a health insurance, they will always include a medical card which you can use when you are admitted to any hospital. But keep in mind that in order for you to use the medical card, the hospital must be a panel to your insurance company.

Agree to what Min_iBanding has explained. Certain companies do provide their staff with a medical card, which enable the staff to use it while they are in employment to that company. But also, you may purchase personal medical card just so in case there's not enough coverage provided by the company you're working for.

But Miss Mei Lin, it's not compulsory for you to include medical card when you seek for a health insurance. You may opt it out if you think that is unnecessary ☺️ Nevertheless, it's great if you have one. For my insurance company, not only you can go to panel hospital, but any hospitals can do. There's no restriction to which hospital you can use for the benefit of medical card. I can show you how it works if you want. Hope this helps!

People always mention about medical card because that is your immediate need. Apart from medical card, people also need life insurance, critical illness and saving for retirement. If someone already have company to take care of their medical bills, then they may want to look at a deductible medical card. It gives a saving of 50% or more in premium because they already have company to cover them.

Dear MeiLin,

Medical card serve to cover your hospital treatment cost to ease your financial burden. If you are pro to government hospital, you are also encourage to take up a medical plan since nowadays government also need to pay for some fees. As in government hospital, you spend less on medical cost, so usually insurer will compensate you in way of cash allowance.

Critical Illness protection serve to give you income replacement in case diagnosed with any critical illness mentioned in the policy. Usually need time to frequent follow up for treatment, this might cause to be jobless. Hence, it's good if you have both medical and critical illness cover so that your medical cost are taken care of as well as your income.

Hope this is beneficial for you.

Hi all, thank you so much for the explanation. It's clearer now. At least when I do some shopping for a health policy, I know what to look for.
